This is the second of a three-volume commentary on the gospel of Matthew from Europe's leading Matthew scholar. Volume 1 Matthew 1-7 was previously published in the "Continental Commentaries" series. Luz's commentary is especially noteworthy, not only for his incisive exegesis, but also his keen eye for the importance of the history of interpretation and his attention to the relevance of the New Testament for contemporary Christian ethics. This commentary includes excursuses on Son of David; Matthew's Interpretation of the Parables; Peter in the Gospel of Matthew; and Son of Man.

This English edition of volume two is a translation of volume two and part of volume three of Professor Luz's German four-volume commentary on the Gospel of Matthew. It will be followed in the Hermeneia series by a third volume, based on the remaining chapters of volume three and all of volume four of the German work. The editors of Hermeneia decided to publish these volumes first, because an older English version of volume one of the German commentary has already been published. A revised edition of volume one will then be published, reflecting the author's changes and including full bibliographic information as well as indices for the entire work.
The English translation of the text of the Gospel of Matthew is based on the German translation by Professor Luz and reflects his exegetical decisions. Other biblical texts are usually quoted from the New Revised Standard Version. Quotations of Latin and Greek authors, except where noted, follow the texts and translations of the Loeb Classical Library or other standard editions. Translations from the Dead Sea Scrolls are normally from Geza Vermes, The Dead Sea Scrolls in English (3rd ed.; London and New York: Penguin, 1987).
